The United Nations today announced the establishment of an Inter-agency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, which will be co-chaired by Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan.

Antimicrobial resistance happens when various harmful micro-organisms (such as bacteria, fungi and virus) become resistance to available medications.

September last year, countries adopted a political declaration to establish an Inter-agency Coordination Group. This will help help improve the health, well-being and productivity of people especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, where exposure to diseases and infections are high.
